Trail - Cove Lake Dayhike
Saturday, July 21, 2008
Brief Description: A day hike in the Cove Lake area of the Cumberland Trail near Caryville, Tennessee
Post Trip Report: The Hiwassee Club joined members of the Eastanellee Baptist Church Outdoor Ministry for a hike on a section of the Cumberland Trail in Cove Lake State Park in Caryville, TN. The park is located northwest of Knoxville in Campbell County 2 1/2 miles south of north on I-75 from Athens, TN. Larry Lane, PE teacher of City Park School, led the group and we were joined by the park ranger (Larry's brother-in-law) and the park manager (son-in-law of the Landrum's who are members of the Eastanellee Baptist Church). So we had the park ranger and the park manager hiking with us! We did quite a steep 1 1/2 mile climb to the summit which is called Devil's Raceway. At Devil's Raceway is an outcropping of large boulders and a nice view overlooking Cove Lake and Caryville. We returned by the same route on a series of switchbacks. We saw a nice waterfall and some wildflowers. There were several wild hydrangeas and some pipsissewa. Cove Lake has a lot to offer outdoor enthusiasts including an olympic size pool, campground for tents and RVs and some hiking trails. After the hike, some participants swam while others checked out the campground. Then we had a late lunch at Ricker's Barbeque which is also located in the park. Hikers participating from the Hiwassee Hiking Club were Joanne Jackson and Jane Bohannon.
